Approach to Evaluations

Dr. Roger deBeus has a fluid approach to the evaluation process. Although a general description is provided for the various types of evaluation, there is no one fixed set of tests she administers in each situation. Rather, he tailors each evaluation to the needs, signs, and symptoms of the client, determining these through Intake Clinical Interview, history provided by referral sources, and observation of the client during the evaluation process. Regardless of type of evaluation, each client can expect one appointment for Intake Clinical Interview alone, during which history is obtained to assist with planning what tests are appropriate for that individual and to assist with interpretation of results, so that reports are individualized to each client. One to three appointments will be scheduled to complete testing. Testing of Reading Comprehension should be expected by any adult who did not finish high school, who reports learning difficulties in elementary/middle/high school, or who reports having received special services during elementary/middle/high school. This is done to verify the client is able to comprehend independently written tests used during evaluation. If Reading Comprehension is below guidelines for a particular test, a version using a CD that reads questions aloud may be used.

Psychological Evaluations

A Psychological Evaluation will consist at a minimum of Personality Assessment and Intelligence Testing. Assessment of Adaptive Functioning will be added, if it appears the client may have difficulties independently managing activities of daily living (ADLs), or if the client’s intellectual capacity is in the range of Intellectual/Developmental Delay. Testing addressing social functioning, attentional issues, and/or memory issues will be added based on the client’s presenting signs and symptoms.

Psychoeducational Evaluations

Psychoeducational Evaluation will be completed based on the requirements of the educational institution or testing institution/facility for which the client wants accommodations. In addition to Clinical Interview, most of these institutions/facilities require Intelligence (Aptitude) Testing, Achievement Testing, Personality Testing, and Assessment of Information Processing.

Neuropsychological Evaluations

Neuropsychological Evaluation is based on the reason for referral (such as ruling out dementia, determining consequences of head injury, or determining other reasons for declining cognitive functioning). All neuropsychological evaluations will include Intelligence Testing and Personality Testing, to which appropriate neuropsychological tests will be added.
